DAYS OF WINE & ROSES

When Lord & Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard decided to convert their walled garden at Carlton Towers near Selby in North Yorkshire into a vineyard over 10 years ago little did they know that they were plugging into a current trend.

For English wineries are having a moment and becoming increasingly popular as a day out for wine tastings, picnics, and special celebrations. The Walled Garden Vineyard at Carlton Towers has to be one of the prettiest in England with its neat rows of vines, old English roses, fruit trees and herbs.

Now visitors to the stately home can get their own taste of this lovely venue by booking afternoon tea, or a hamper to savour among the vines, enjoy a guided tour with a light lunch and glass of wine, or even hold their own private event or wedding ceremony there.

Originally built in the 18th century to supply fruit and vegetables for the family featuring much sought-after pineapples, The Walled Garden Vineyard has gone through many guises including supplying produce for the war effort during two World Wars.

Today the vines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are blended to produce a limited release Duke Miles English sparkling wine named after Lord Gerald’s father. The owners are also painstakingly researching the original Victorian fruit and herbs grown in the garden to make the visitor experience as authentic as possible.

“We are seeing The Walled Garden Vineyard becoming an increasingly popular venue for a day out, special occasions and private events. Visitors can enjoy the view from The Stables Tearoom, savour a delicious afternoon tea or choose an exclusive spot between the vines to celebrate with one of our hampers among a group of family or friends,” said Claire Baker, General Manager, Carlton Towers.
